Mt. Vernon is fortunate to have two premiere healthcare facilities. Both St. Mary's Good Samaritan Regional Health Center and Crossroads Community Hospital have won prestigious awards for their services and they continue to improve delivery of health care in our region.

They continue to expand their services through the establishment of tertiary programs, such as interventional cardiology and open heart surgery and in 2006 they opened the state of the art Center for Cancer Care in Mount Vernon. The new Mount Vernon campus serves as the Regional Resource Facility of emergency medical service for nine counties in Southern Illinois. They have an established disaster plan to provide treatment for burns, chemical exposure/respiratory distress, and other traumas or industrial hazards. www.smgsi.org
